Sof Omar Cave
Located in the Bale province of Ethiopia, Sof Omar Cave is formed by the flowing waters of the Weyib River that runs through the mountains, creating the longest cave system in Ethiopia and Africa, stretching over 15 kilometers. Although there are more than 40 entrances to the cave, only four are dominant. Named after the former Muslim sheikh Sof Omar Ahmed, who reputedly took refuge here in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, the cave holds cultural significance. Ayiew Maco, a place where the river sinks, is named after Sof Omar’s daughter, and the river reappears at Holuca after 1 kilometer. This unique feature adds to the cave’s allure, with amazing limestone formations shaping captivating columns.
