Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023, the establishment of the 2,400 square kilometer Bale Mountains National Park was crucial for the survival of Ethiopian endemic species such as the mountain Nyala, Minilik’s bushbuck, and the Simien red fox. Endemic animals thrive in this habitat, including the Niyala, while the park is also home to 78 mammal species including Leopard, Lion, Hyena, and many others. Sof Omar Cave

Located in the Bale province of Ethiopia, Sof Omar Cave is formed by the flowing waters of the Weyib River that runs through the mountains, creating the longest cave system in Ethiopia and Africa, stretching over 15 kilometers. Although there are more than 40 entrances to the cave, only four are dominant. Named after the former Muslim sheikh Sof Omar Ahmed, who reputedly took refuge here in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, the cave holds cultural significance. Ayiew Maco, a place where the river sinks, is named after Sof Omar’s daughter, and the river reappears at Holuca after 1 kilometer. This unique feature adds to the cave’s allure, with amazing limestone formations shaping captivating columns. Exploring the cave involves crossing the river seven times, which can be done on foot or by small boats, offering visitors an unforgettable experience of natural wonder.
